nurse是护士，room是房间，nursing room是护士的房间吗？

在疫情反复下，除了医生，我们还要和这群白衣天使们说一声：“谢谢你！”

国际护士节的英语是International Nurses Day。今天就和英大一起来学一学nurse这个单词吧。

nurse作为“护士”，它的定义是：

a person trained to care for people who are ill or not able to care for themselves because of injury or old age, and who may also help doctors in treating people.

被培训来照顾生病的或因受伤、年老而不能照顾自己的人，也可以是帮助医生治疗的人。

除了“护士”，你还知道nurse的其他意思吗？

前缀nur-表示“养育”，作为名词的nurse还表示“奶妈”、“保姆”、“保护树”（一种植物）。

作为动词时，nurse则引申为“护理”、“照顾”。

明白了nurse的本义，我们就能明白下面几个词的由来了：

nursery /ˈnɜːsəri/

If you nurture something such as a young child or a young plant, you care for it while it is growing and developing. 养育

If you nurture plans, ideas, or people, you encourage them or help them to develop. 培养 

nourish /nʌrɪʃ/

To nourish a person, animal, or plant means to provide them with the food that is necessary for life, growth, and good health. 为…提供营养nurse加-ing变动名词形容room，但它可不是护士间哦，而是“哺乳室”、“育婴室”。

More and more nursing rooms have been built.

越来越多的哺乳室建成了。nursing home表示“疗养院”、“小型私人医院”、“养老院”。

 

He died in a nursing home at the age of 87.

他在一家养老院去世，享年87岁。

03 | nursery rhyme

nursery是由nurse变形来的，表示“幼儿教育的”、“托儿所”，而rhyme有“押韵”、“诗”之意，所以nursery rhyme表示“童谣”。

 

She lapsed into a little girl voice to deliver a nursery rhyme.

她改用童声唱起了童谣。

 

04 | nurse a grievance

nurse作为动词，也有“怀抱”的意思，引申出来表示“心怀”，而grievance则是“苦衷”、“牢骚”，所以连起来就是“心怀不满”。

 

nurse还可以搭配through，nurse through表示“在……期间照顾”，“帮助……克服”。

 

Consider this thought when next you feel tempted to nurse a grievance: that life is too short to be little! 

下次你心生怨言时，想想这一点：“人生苦短休斤斤！”
